Kampung Hulu Mosque is the oldest mosque in Melaka which was built in 1728 that is still functioning now. This mosque is located at the intersection of Jalan Masjid Kampung Hulu and Jalan Masjid which is an old commercial area that is dominated by Chinese shop-houses. The mosque was built by the locals during the Dutch colonial period. ⁣

The mosque has a three-layered roof in a pyramidal shape. The space between these layers of the roof allows air and light to enter the mosque. They believed that the top layer of the roof symbolizes ‘one’s Iman (belief) in God’, while the second layer symbolizes the ‘relationship between humans’ and the third represents the `nature that connects man with the Creator’.⁣

This building is fairly unusual for a mosque because it is inspired by Sumatran architecture instead of the traditional Arabic design. However, it is made up of brick and stone unlike most mosques in Sumatera that are made up of wood.⁣

Similar to other mosques built in Melaka at that time, the decoration technique with Chinese influences were used to decorate this mosque. Materials such as ceramic tiles and floor tiles from the Chinese delegation of the Ching Dynasty were also used. The minaret of this mosque reflects the architectural features of the pagoda with the style of Balai Nobat.
