Baju Kebaya Nyonya is the traditional clothing of the Baba Nyonya community. This Baju Kebaya Nyonya was created by the Peranakan people when they migrated to Melaka. It is made from a type of fabric known as Rubia Gauze.

This plain-woven fabric is quite sparse and light as it is made of a relatively fine twisted yarn. The special yarns used to sew this fabric are silk, cotton, and polyester. This Nyonya kebaya pattern usually has its own motif.

In ancient times, the yarn and fabric used to produce this lady’s kebaya were specially imported from European countries.

Originally, this kebaya nyonya had a long size but it became short and small depending on the wearer’s body. Kebaya Nyonya is also said to be often worn together with songket cloth or batik sarong along with beaded shoes and kerongsang.
