The proclamation of independence on 20 February 1956 in Bandar Hilir, was a milestone in the history of the country. To commemorate this historic event, the State Government of Melaka has chosen a building opposite site the Bandar Hilir Field to be the Proclamation of Independence Memorial.
The building was built in 1911 as a Melaka Club building for social activities. The architecture of this building represents the British element. The National Archives of Malaysia has been put in charge of administering the Proclamation of Independence Memorial. Work on renovating this building has been started since November 1984 by the Melaka Public Works Department. The Proclamation of Independence Memorial was officially opened by YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra on 31 August 1985.
The establishment of the Proclamation of Independence Memorial is to instill awareness among the people regarding the struggle for independence. Besides, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Melaka. Scope or exhibition segment covers the period from Melaka Sultanate Palace 1400 to the Formation of Malaysia in 1963. The materials exhibit at this Memorial such as documents, photographs, maps, treaties, speeches, tapes, publications, newspaper articles, and artifacts kept and preserved by the National Archives of Malaysia.
